When considering a new custom home, it is natural to have ideas in your mind regarding its square footage, number of bedrooms and baths, and other amenities like added garage space, an in-ground pool, and/or an outdoor kitchen that is ideally suited for entertaining family and friends.

But what about the seemingly “small” stuff…especially if it can turn into a bigger issue later?

One way to ensure that you have not left out any steps is to have a new home building checklist in hand. That way, various items can be dealt with throughout the building process, rather than having to go back and fix them later.

Just some of these can include:

  • Placement of power outlets and light switches. Where the power outlets and light switches are placed throughout the home can either add to, or detract from, functionality. This is particularly important today, as so many more people are working from home and require ample lighting and added power sources for their office equipment.
  • Height of the shower head(s). Shower head height is another issue that may not be considered until it’s time to use the shower for the very first time. That being said, it is oftentimes better to “err” on the side of higher rather than having it sit too low.
  • Storage space. Storage space is key in most any home. In Florida, homes typically do not have basements, so it is essential to take a look at other possible areas, such as an attic and/or under staircases.
  • Door swing direction. While it might not sound like a big deal, door swing direction should ideally be consistent throughout a home. Also, if two doors are on perpendicular walls, they could interfere with one another, based on the way they swing open and shut.
